Our Residents are the fabric of our Project Access tapestry of communities across the country. Their diversity of backgrounds and experiences is truly extraordinary but even more remarkable than their individual stories is the seemingly boundless spirit of determination displayed by our Residents. Today we highlight one such story.
The Rivera family are residents Walden Lake in Plant City, Florida, where they have made good use of the Project Access Resource Center to the advantage of their son, Jonathan. Both parents work, making it difficult for them to help Jonathan with his evening homework. Their sporadic efforts have been bolstered via Jonathan’s participation in the resource center’s After School Program which has provided Jonathan with tutoring to improve his reading and communications capabilities.
Over the past two years Jonathan has significantly improved his reading skills, attaining his age-appropriate level in school, and becoming more confident overall (including reading aloud in front of other children and adults). This increased educational confidence resulted in Jonathan participating in the 2021 Plant City Strawberry Festival Youth Baking Contest where he engaged his steadily improving math and reading skills to win First Place Award for his glazed strawberry bread!
“Moving to this apartment complex was the best decision my family could have made because we had the Project Access Center available to us and our son,” says Maribel Rivera. “He has grown out of his shell with being more sociable, vocal, and has increased his educational level at school by having that extra resource. Jonathan looks forward to coming to the center every day.”
Everyone can use a little assist now and then and we’re delighted that the Rivera family found the resources they needed for Jonathan at the Project Access Resource Center. Now if we can only convince Jonathan to share with us his award-winning recipe for strawberry bread!
