FOUNDERS PHILOSOPHY:
While the mission of an affordable housing non-profit may be fulfilled by simply producing
affordable housing, Foundation for Social Resources clearly understood the challenges and needs
of the low income population, and believed that they could do more to set them on the path to
security and stability. By definition, residents of affordable housing communities are persons
and families whose income does not exceed 60% of median income. Most are struggling families,
starting new careers, starting new families, and often time starting over in a new country.
Despite the fact that one or both parents in the home work multiple jobs and pay rent, this
population is often described as "the working poor" - they simply do not have enough to go
around. They live on a tightrope day to day, making choices that attempt to balance their
needs for transportation, housing, education, nutrition and health care with the knowledge
that they do not have sufficient funds to meet all the family needs. In recognition of this,
Project Access, Inc. was founded in 1999 to help bridge this gap - to meet the needs of low
income families with a more holistic approach - bringing needed education, health and social
services to residents of these communities in their backyards - overcoming the common barriers
to service and providing the tools necessary for these families and individuals to improve
their lives and the futures of their children.
