HONORING BOB CAMPBELL

Project Access Inaugural Teen Conference!
On July 22, 2007 Project Access held its first Teen Conference for youth ages 13-20. 115 youth were bussed in from
Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles counties to participate in an exciting day filled with team building activities and workshops
on college readiness, financial aid, drugs and alcohol and reproductive health. Entertainment consisted of a street fair with
teen-related organizations such as Cypress College, Planned Parenthood and Camp Fire USA, a DJ, a musical performance
and break dancers who taught kids dance moves. The day ended with a $500 scholarship that was raffled off and won by
Gustavo Sanchez. The Project Access teen program and this event was made possible by The Draper Family Foundation who
provided $25,000 in funding for the Helping Kids Achieve Program which provides quality after or in-school programs that
meet the needs of disadvantaged youth by helping children reach their academic potential and prepare them for college.

Mixer for a Mission
PATRONS for Project Access
held its bi-annual "Mixer for a Mission" on Monday, April 30,
2007 at Z Mario Restaurant in Irvine.
It was a great evening enjoyed by all and thanks to your support Project
Access was successful in raising more than $7,000
to help support the education, health and social services that are
provided to low-income residents throughout California.
A special thank you to our sponsors that made this fantastic event
possible!

One of the evening’s
highlights was the moving testimonial provided by Ms. Betty Alvarez,
(pictured in the center photograph) a resident at Golden West Tower
Apartments in Torrance. Some of the activities that Betty participates in
at the center are the monthly birthday celebrations, bingo activities, the
puzzle collection, and the senior day trips. Betty is just beginning to
learn to use the Internet and she expressed how comfortable she is with
requesting assistance from the Project Access staff when needed. Each
month Betty attends a Healthy Aging Seminar that is held at the Senior
Resource Center and she thoroughly enjoys when the Alpha Phi Omega coed
fraternity hosts their lunch socials with the residents. Betty expressed
that she really enjoys and benefits from the programs and services that
Project Access provides at the Senior Resource Center where she lives.

United Way 8th Annual Real Estate and Building Industry Luncheon
The Orange County’s United Way 8th Annual Real Estate and Building Industry Luncheon was held May 16, 2007. Jonathan
B. Webb, Executive Director of the Foundation for Social Resources and Founder, Board Chair for Project Access was
presented the 5th Annual Dan Donahue Award, in memory of Dan Donahue – community philanthropist and commercial real
estate business leader of Donahue Schriber.
One of the two Keeping Kids on Track success stories featured was Project Access’ very own, Fernando Sandoval.
Fernando, now 18 years old grew up in Anaheim and recently graduated from high school with a 3.89 GPA. Growing up,
Fernando regularly visited the Project Access Family Resource Center at Park Vista Apartments in Anaheim, where he lives.
There, Fernando received assistance with his homework in a positive environment each day and as a result was able to avoid
becoming involved in gang activity and drug abuse. Fernando is very appreciative of the Family Resource Center where he is
not only part of the weekly teen group, but where he also volunteers regularly to help younger children with their homework.
In addition, Fernando distributes the Park Vista Family Resource Center newsletter to the 700 unit apartment complex each
month. “It makes me feel good when someone thanks me after doing something for them. My volunteering doesn’t only
benefit one person; sometimes it benefits a whole group…Volunteering for the community center brings up my self-esteem
because I like helping others and I am proud to be the person that I am.” Fernando has the goal of attending college to study
electrical engineering.
United Way made a gift to Project Access of $10,000 thanks to the generosity of their donors and the Donahue Schriber
company.

Northern California
Project Access celebrates the anniversary of their expansion to Northern California!
One year ago — June 1, 2006, to be exact — Project Access opened seven (7) Family Resource Centers located in
affordable housing complexes in Alameda, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties which represents 1,397 families.
Sophie Trascher, Northern California Regional Director, has led the expansion by hiring excellent staff and partnering with
community leaders, other non-profits, social service agencies and for profit companies to bring residents on-site services. “The
families we serve are our most important asset at Project Access. We’re dedicated in supporting families and building a
stronger sense of community at each apartment community” said Sophie. This first year has been particularly exciting and
gratifying to see families helping other families; community partners willing to assist in meeting the on-going needs of our
families. The hard work and dedication of Project Access staff ensure the resident’s voices are heard throughout the
community and that services are provided to meet their needs.
Key accomplishments have been two tremendous health fairs held at City Towers and Valley Palms Family Resource
Centers. There was great resident attendance, vendor participation, distribution of valuable information and free health
screenings for all residents. Establishing English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes with Fremont Adult School for
residents at Glen View/Glen Haven Apartments Family Resource Center has been a huge success for this community.
Implementation of a zero-5 Kinder Program at Orchard Glen, Valley Palms and Glen View/Glen Haven Family Resource
Centers has also increased parental participation at the centers. The holidays brought partnerships with Toys for Tots and The
Mercury News Gift of Reading Program. We have created partnerships with organizations such as Wells Fargo, First 5,
Second Harvest of Santa Clara County, Season of Sharing Program with Alameda County Social Services, and Santa Clara
County Social Services to name a few.
Although our challenges are many, we are innovative, creative and know that we continue to change lives and empower
communities.
